Situation: Sam is telling Ken the key for a good speach
Ken: Sam, were you good at speaking in front of people? I get so nervous when I have to make a presentation in my university seminars.
Sam: No, not at all, but I remembered the days when I was in a band in my high school days. We didn’t get nervous for the tunes we practiced a lot and enjoyed them But all the members grew very tense for the tunes we hadn’t practiced much , and it was a mess as expected.
Ken: So, you practiced your presentation a lot?
Sam: That’s right, I memorized the entire text.
Ken: Memorized?
Sam: Yes, when you watch the speech of Japan's Prime Minister on TV, most of the time, they speak looking down at the text, don't they? I didn't think that would convey my feelings. I wanted to give my presentation looking at the faces of the listeners.
Ken: Mmm. You’re right, but it’s difficult, even in Japanese.
Sam: I knew the quality of our products were good. That’s what our skilled workers were proud of. So I thought it’s my responsibility if I couldn’t convey it to others.
Ken: Wow, that’s really cool!
Sam: Thanks, I didn’t realize it then but memorizing this turned out to be a great force later on.

Sam 「僕はうちの商品のクオリティが高いことはわかっていた。それがうちの職人たちの誇りだからね。だから、それがもし伝わらなかったとしたら、それは自分の責任だと思ったんだ。」
Ken 「みんな、かっこいいですね！」
Sam 「ありがとう。この『丸暗記』はその後、すごい威力を発揮してくれたんだ。もっとも、そうなるなんて自分では予想もしていなかったけど。」
Ken 「どういう意味ですか？」
Sam 「それはおいおい話すよ。」

Ken: What about the presentation?
Sam: I started to draft “How our screws excel” and “the difference with competing products” in Japanese. It’s been told over and over from my Uncle and the skilled workers all the time…and …
Ken: Google Translate and the correct site, is it?
Sam: Exactly! Hitting the voice button on Google Translate even teaches you the pronunciation. So it’s really convenient.
Ken: Internet’s very useful.
Sam: That’s right. So, after that, I read the presentation in front of English native speakers, received comments and had my pronunciation corrected.
Ken: Sam, you had foreigner friends?
Sam: No way, I would’ve been able to speak better if I did.

Ken: “…….” (a bit sulky)
Sam: What’s wrong?
Ken: You told me your English wasn’t good but we’re talking of different levels. You could browse and read the websites in English, couldn’t you?
Sam: Ah, so that’s what you’re sulking about. No, I browsed in Japanese and hit them.
Ken: Really? In Japanese? Amazing you made a hit.
Sam: Well, the government is promoting overseas advancement of Japanese companies. JETRO, an
organization affiliated to METI was sponsoring this show at the time (showing him the web page).
So I could read about the show and apply for entry in Japanese.
Ken: Is that so?
Sam: Yes, but brochures in English had to be prepared and presentations had to be made in English as
well. Without any budget, I couldn’t outsource it.
Ken: So, you mean you had to do it all by yourself?
Sam: Well, actually, all I did was to put all the contents of the brochure in Japanese into Google Translate.
I made some corrections and then, put it through a correction site to finish it.
Ken: What’s a correction site?
Sam: (Showing his PC screen) This is the one I used. It’s a site called “lang-8” (http://lang-8.com/).
You can enter your diary or texts in the language you’re learning and a native will correct it for you.
Ken: Really? I had no idea.
Sam: And it’s free! All I had to do was then to order the printing, which I also found a place on the net where they’d do it cheap.

Ken: Sam, I had a hard time trying to sleep last night wanting to know what happened next.
Sam: Sorry for cutting it short yesterday, so, where were we?
Ken: We were here, in this café.
Sam: No, that’s not what I meant. I mean to say, until where did we stop our conversation yesterday? It’s an often used phrase.
Ken: Is that so? Well, you mentioned being a project manager.
Sam: OK, so that’s where we were. My job was to find customers overseas, but I had no idea on where to start.
Ken: So, what did you do?
Sam: I remembered going to a “Food Show” where I have been. When I was a student. I worked at a restaurant for about 3 months and the owner took me there. He told me “you can try sample food as much as you want”.
Ken: A Food Show? What’s that?
Sam: It’s where the food manufacturers show their goods, and people from restaurants and hotels go there to find new food and ingredients. You can try them, listen to details and discuss if you’re interested.

(Recollection scene): President’s decision made all workers surprised.
President: (uncle): The company will shift its market overseas. An overseas advancement project team will be established inside the company.
Worker A: Who’s gonna do it ? There’s no one in the company who can negotiate with foreign people.
President: I think you all know that we do not have the budget to outsource this project.
(Workers agitated)
President: So the project leader will be you, Osamu.
Sam: Me? But I’m only a part-timer! Why am I the project leader for overseas advancement?
President: Oh, remember? You used to sing English songs in your high schooldays in a rock band.

Sam: No, not at all! Memorizing lyrics and singing and speaking English are two separate things!
President: But it’s already decided.
Sam: But, but… You said Project Team, who else are the members of the team?

社長 「というわけで、プロジェクトリーダーはオサム、お前な」
Sam 「えー、社長。僕、アルバイトですよ！ どうしてアルバイトの僕が海外進出プロジェクトのリーダーなんですか？」
社長 「ほらお前、高校時代バンドやってて英語で歌うたってただろ。英語くらいできるんだろ？」

Situation: His company was facing difficulties ,so they made up their mind to…
Ken: I read in the papers that family run factories of Japan are facing hard times. What about the factory you were working for?
Sam: Good question! Even if you make products that are excellent in quality, it gets beaten by cheap imports from foreign countries. Bad economy also had an influence in poor product sales.
Ken: I also choose the cheaper imports than “Made in Japan” items when I shop.
Sam: That’s natural. The factory I was with was very close to bankruptcy.
Ken: Really, is that so?
Sam: So my uncle, the president, thought about various things. And one day, in front of the gathered workers, he said
“We can’t sell any more in Japan, so we will be looking for markets overseas!”.

Sam 「当然だよね。うちの町工場も例にもれず、倒産する寸前だった」
Ken 「ええっ、そうなんですか？」
Sam 「そう。で、社長である叔父はいろいろ考えたんだろうね。ある日職人たちの前で発表したんだ。『日本ではもう売れないから、販路を海外に移します！』と」
Ken 「言うのは簡単そうですけどね。実際は大変そうですね」
Sam 「そうなんだよ。日本がダメだから海外って発想が単純すぎる！」
Ken 「確かに！ 叔父さんは海外にコネクションがあったとか？」
Sam 「ぜんぜん！ 叔父は英語もしゃべれないし、海外なんてまったく縁がない超ドメスティック人間なんだぜ！」
Ken 「そうなんですね」

Situation: As a result, Sam started to work as a part-timer. However, it might have changed his way of life.
Ken: So, what happened after you failed your employment interviews?
Sam: I had nothing to do after graduation, so I stayed home being idle. But then, my parents told me to at least do part-time job. So I started moonlighting in a small factory run by my mother’s brother, in other words, my uncle.
Ken: What kind of a factory was it?
Sam: Screws, the kind you put into a hole and rotate to secure something.
Ken: And what kind of work did you do?
Sam: Everything. From an assistant for the skilled workers to inventory management in the warehouse, deliveries, taking care of the odd jobs.
Without any skills, I was rotated around the departments.
Ken: Didn’t you get fed up?
Sam: I didn’t like it in the beginning, but came to think of it now, I was very lucky.
Ken: What do you mean?
Sam: For example, if I had accounting skills, I would have been trapped in working in accounting all the time. But without any skills, I was sent to various departments and got to see the full picture of the company while still very young.
Ken: Great! You’re a positive thinker!
Sam: Of course! I didn’t think so at the time. But it could be that it was my uncle’s intention to make me work in various departments from the start.

Ken 「それで就職試験で全滅して、どうしたんですか？」
Sam 「卒業してから半年くらいは家でプラプラしていたよ。でも、しばらくして親からアルバイトくらいしなさい。と言われて、母親の弟、つまり叔父さんの経営する町工場でバイトすることになったんだ」
Ken 「何を作る工場ですか？」
Sam 「ネジだよ。穴に差し込んで、くるくるまわして何かを固定したりするアレ」
Ken 「へぇ。どんな仕事をしていたんですか？」
Sam 「なんでもやったよ。職人のアシスタントや倉庫での在庫管理や配達… つまりは雑用。何のスキルもないから、いろんな部署をたらい回しにされてた」
Ken 「嫌になりませんでしたか？」
Sam 「最初は嫌だった。でも、今はそれがすごいラッキーなことだったと思ってる」
Ken 「どういうこと？」
Sam 「たとえば僕に経理のスキルがあったら、経理の仕事をずっとさせられていたと思う。でも、僕に何のスキルもなかったから、いろんな部署に行かされて、若いうちから会社の全体を見ることができたんだ」
Ken 「すごい！ 前向きですね！」
Sam 「もちろん当時はそんなふうには思ってなかったよ。たぶん、叔父は最初からそれを意図して、僕をいろんな部署で働かせていたのかもしれないね」
