Ken: I read in the papers that family run factories of Japan are facing hard times. What about the factory you were working for?
Sam: Good question! Even if you make products that are excellent in quality, it gets beaten by cheap imports from foreign countries. Bad economy also had an influence in poor product sales.
Ken: I also choose the cheaper imports than “Made in Japan” items when I shop.
Sam: That’s natural. The factory I was with was very close to bankruptcy.

Ken 「新聞で日本の町工場は苦戦していると読みました。Samさんのいた工場はどうだったんですか？」
Sam 「おっ、いい質問だね。いま日本ではいくらいいものを作っても、安い外国産の製品に値段で負けてしまう。それに景気が悪くてモノが売れない」
Ken 「僕も買い物するときには『メイドインジャパン』よりもつい安いほうを選んでしまいます」
Sam 「当然だよね。うちの町工場も例にもれず、倒産する寸前だった」
Ken 「ええっ、そうなんですか？」
Sam 「そう。で、社長である叔父はいろいろ考えたんだろうね。ある日職人たちの前で発表したんだ。『日本ではもう売れないから、販路を海外に移します！』と」
Ken 「言うのは簡単そうですけどね。実際は大変そうですね」
Sam 「そうなんだよ。日本がダメだから海外って発想が単純すぎる！」
Ken 「確かに！ 叔父さんは海外にコネクションがあったとか？」
Sam 「ぜんぜん！ 叔父は英語もしゃべれないし、海外なんてまったく縁がない超ドメスティック人間なんだぜ！」
Ken 「そうなんですね」
Sam 「といっても、僕も職人たちもきっと社外の専門家に頼むとか英語できる人を採用するんだろうと思ってた。だから、ハッキリ言って他人事だった、そのときは。でも、次の瞬間、驚くべき言葉が叔父の口から出たんだよ」
