Situation: Sam tells Ken how he decided to study in Asia.
Ken: So, where did you go? The States?
Sam: No, well, of course, the main stream of MBA is in the US. But it was a little different for me. In addition to learning Management and English, another of my target was to establish a network with the business people overseas, especially in Asia. So I was thinking of studying in Asia from the start.
Ken: Really, studying for MBA in Asia?
Sam: Yes, I asked someone in one of the organizations affiliated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Japan who once sponsored a trade show overseas, and he gave me a name of a graduate school suitable for me to attend.
Ken: What’s the name of the school?
Sam: It’s a graduate school called AIM in the Philippines.
Ken: AIM? What is AIM?
Sam: You should ask, “What does XXX stand for?” in such case. This is used quite often by native speakers also.
Ken: So then, what does AIM stand for?
Sam: AIM stands for Asian Institute of Management
Ken: Does that mean many students from Asian countries?
Sam: About half are from the Philippines, while the rest comes from the ASEAN nations. The curriculum is focused on case study methods based on those being taught at Harvard Business School (HBS), which also makes it quite popular.
Ken: The classes were done by English?
Sam: Yes, English is one of the official language in the Philippines and apart from their native language classes, most of the classes from elementary to graduate school are conducted in English.
Ken: Is that so!
Sam: So, I set my eyes on attending AIM and started preparations.
Ken: It must be pretty tough getting accepted?
Sam: According to the person who suggested AIM, he said that my experience
in advancement of a small factory overseas would be important. However there was still a big problem remaining.

Ken 「で、どこの国に留学したんですか？ アメリカ？」
Sam 「MBA留学というと、やっぱりアメリカが主流なんだけど、僕の場合は違った。僕の留学の目的は経営と英語を学ぶことに加えて、海外、特にアジアのビジネスマンたちとのネットワークを構築することにあった。だから、最初からアジアで学ぼうと考えていた。」
Ken 「へぇ！ アジアでMBA留学ですか？」
Sam 「そうだよ。海外での展示会を主催してくれた日本の外務省の外郭団体の人に相談すると、ある大学院の名前を挙げ、そこに行くことをおススメされたよ。」
Ken 「なんという大学院ですか？」
Sam 「AIMというフィリピンの大学院だよ。」
Ken 「AIMって何ですか？」
Sam 「そういうときには『What does ～ stand for?』っていうよ。これもネイティブがよく使うから覚えておいて。」

Sam 「AIMはAsian Institute of Managementだよ。」
Ken 「へぇ。アジアからの留学生が多いんですか？」
Sam 「フィリピン人が半分くらいで、あとはASEAN 地域からの留学生という話だった。米国ハーバード大学ビジネススクール（HBS）の教育手法に基づいたケースメソッドが中心に学ぶというのも人気の理由らしかった。」
Ken 「授業は英語なんですか？」
Sam 「そうだよ。フィリピンで英語は公用語のひとつで、小学校から大学・大学院にいたるまで、国語以外の授業は英語で行われているんだ。」
Ken 「へぇ、そうなんですね！」
Sam 「僕は進学する大学院をAIMに絞って準備を始めた。」
Ken 「入るの難しいんだろうなぁ～。」
Sam 「僕にその大学院のことを教えてくれた人の話によると、僕は町工場を海外進出させたという実績が認められるだろうと言ってた。ただ、僕がAIMに入るには大きな問題点があった。」
