Situation: The effective way to learn English
Ken: What was the big problem?
Sam: One of the conditions for entrance was TOEFL score of 550 or higher. The person who advised me also said that I’d have a hard time keeping up with the class with my English at that time.
Ken: uh,,, So what happened?
Sam: I bought some books in TOEFL test and started studying. I also tried to have interviews with MBA holders and those who were good English speakers around me. “How do you improve your English?” I asked again and again. And I found that those who spoke good English had one learning method in common.
Ken: What was that? I need to know it now! Please tell me!
Sam: One of the ways to improve your English is to read it out aloud. Many people told me they’ve done this.
Ken: I see. You did say you were able to speak in English because you practiced your presentation draft by reading it out aloud, didn’t you Sam?
Sam: Yes, I knew how effective it was. So, I decided to start it out immediately.
Ken: What kind of text did you use?
Sam: Anything that was written in English. In-flight magazines in the seat pocket of an airline or brochures of other companies I received at the trade shows. Anything is okay. I took them back to my hotel and read them out aloud.
Ken: Really?
Sam: Reading out aloud makes you remember by sight, and learn it by sound by saying it out aloud. This means you learn it over twice. So you learn it better.

Ken 「大きな問題点ってなんだったんですか？」
Sam 「入学条件のひとつにTOEFL550点以上をクリアしてること、というのがあった。あと、相談した人からも『あなたの今の英語力だと入学したとしても授業についていけなくて苦労するだろう』って言われていた。」
Ken 「英語かぁ。それでどうしたんですか？」
Sam 「TOEFL対策の本を買って勉強を始めた。あとは僕はまわりのMBAホルダーや英語のうまい人にインタビューしまくったよ。どうやったら英語が上達しますか、って。そうしたら英語が上手な人にはいくつかの共通の学習方法があるってことがわかったんだよ。」
Ken 「それってなんですか？ 早く教えてください～！」
Sam 「英語上達の秘訣のひとつ、それは英語を口に出して読むこと。これは本当に多くの人が実践していた。」
Ken 「なるほどー。たしかにSamさんもプレゼン原稿を声に出していたから英語で商談できたって言ってましたもんねぇ。」
Sam 「そう、それに関しては自分でもその効果を実感していたから、即実行することにした。」
Ken 「どんなテキストを使ったんですか？」
Sam 「それからは英語が書いてあるものはなんでもテキストになったよ。飛行機に乗ったときに置いてある英語の機内誌や展示会でもらった他社の英語のパンフレットもホテルに持ち帰って、口に出して読んだりしてみたよ。」
Ken 「へぇ。」
Sam 「音読は、目で覚えて、口に出すことによって耳でも覚える、つまり二度覚えるから、英語が身に付きやすいんだ。」
