Situation: An unexpected national traits of Asian people
Sam: I also tried my original study method.
Ken: And, what was that?
Sam: Singing songs in English
Ken: Why is singing good?
Sam: Remember? Can you still sing the popular songs when you were still very young or
your elementary school song?
Ken: (reflecting) “Yes, I can still sing my elementary school song”
Sam: See, you remember the ones you learned together with the rhythm. Ken, do you still remember
the phrase that native speaker often use when making an introduction, the one I taught you for the
first time?
Ken: (thinking back a little) “Yes, born and raised” wasn’t it?
Sam: Right, you know, in my high school days, I was in the eighties copy band and these words are
the first word in a song called “Don’t Stop Believin” by a group called “Journey”. When I
heard a native speaker use this word for the first time, I though “I knew those words, there in
that song!” I already knew the phrase, so all I had to do was to use it.
Ken: I see. That sounds good. It also good for change of pace.
Sam: Right, and another thing though I didn’t know at the time, many people in the
Philippines love karaoke. Many students from Vietnam also love karaoke. It seems many Asian people love karaoke.
Ken: So, did you go singing karaoke with them?
Sam: You bet! Everyone had a blast!

Sam 「あと僕はオリジナル勉強法もやっていたよ。」
Ken 「なんですか？」
Sam 「英語で歌を歌うことさ。」
Ken 「どうして歌がいいんですか？」
Sam 「小学校の校歌とか小さいころ流行った歌謡曲って、忘れずに口ずさむことができるだろ？」
Ken 「(思い出しながら)はい！ 小学校の校歌、今でも覚えてます！」
Sam 「だろ。リズムと一緒に覚えたものは忘れにくいものなんだ。Ken、僕がいちばん最初にネイティブが自己紹介でよく使う単語として教えた言葉、覚えている？」
Ken 「(ちょっと考えて)『born and raised in～』ですか？」
Sam 「そう。高校時代、80年代のバンドのコピーをやってたんだけど、『Journey』ってバンドの『Don’t stop believin’』って歌詞の一番最初に出てくるんだ。ネイティブがこの言葉を使っているのを初めて聞いたときに『あ～、あの曲に出てきた言葉だ！』と思った。すでに覚えているフレーズだから、あとは使うだけだった。」
Ken 「なるほど～、それいいですねぇ。気分転換にもなりますね。」
Sam 「その通り。あと、これは後から知ったことなんだけど、留学先のフィリピンはカラオケ好きな国民が多いんだよ。ベトナムからの留学生もカラオケ大好きだったし、カラオケ好きなアジアの民族は多いよ。」
Ken 「一緒にカラオケに行ったりしたんですか？」
Sam 「そりゃ、もうすごい盛り上がるよ～！」
