Situation: When Sam was student, he tried applying many companies. However…
Ken: But you did some employment activities?
Sam: Of course I did. I filled in entry sheets and sent them to about 50 companies.
Ken: What kind of companies did you apply?
Sam: Any companies that could employ me related to distribution, retailing and others.
Ken: And, what happened?
Sam: I applied to 50 and only 3 called me up for an interview. That’s when I really knew how difficult it was to get employed.
Ken: I hear the same kind of stories from my professors and upperclassmen.
Sam: Of the 3, I failed 2 in the first round of the Interviews. I managed to go to the final management interview for 1, but didn’t make it.
Ken: It was depressing.
Sam: Yes. However, the interviewer at the time was a kind person. He said, “At least, master English”, teaching me gently the reason they didn’t accept me.
Ken: I see. So you set your mind to study English.
Sam: No, I didn’t (laugh).
Ken: Really?
Sam: Yes, at the time I thought you can’t learn English if you don’t go abroad to study.

Sam: Not a very good one. I started out being very late for my entrance ceremony.
Ken: Why?
Sam: I couldn’t get up and got lost at the station and when I got there, the guidance program had already started and the other students were getting to know each other quite well. I just felt like an outcast. I didn’t feel like going to school.

Sam: I later learned that those who were getting well immediately after entrance were all graduates of the attached high school.
Ken: That’s what I thought. I felt the same way about those guys from the attached high school.
Sam: I attended the university just to get the minimum required credits so my grades were awful. As I didn’t attend the university, I didn’t have opportunities to join any extracurricular activities. I did some part-time jobs but didn’t last long …

Sam: Yes, it may look like that to others. But in my case , I can work wherever there’s an internet connection. I often work at the hotel pool-side.
Ken: Cool!
Sam: The offices are located in Cebu, Tokyo and Bangkok. I shuttle back and forth. So to others, it look like a vacation every day, travelling from day to day.
Ken: What kind of work do you do?
Sam: I run a company.
Ken: Run? Are you into the sports business?
Sam: I am a president of a company. Run does not only mean to run physically, but it also means to manage.
Ken. Now, I’m learning. What kind of company is it?
Sam: I’m in overseas market advancement consulting.
Ken: ? ? I don’t understand, for example?
Sam: Give advice on the market trends of a country, differences in business practices, finding locations to set up factories, employing local human resources …
Ken: Hmm, I think I get the rough picture. Seems interesting! So you must be very busy flying around the world?

Ken: That’s cool. I read in the newspapers the other day that people working freely like that is increasing.
