Introduce yourself. 　
I’m originally from Yokohama.

Situation: In an English café in Tokyo, Sam approaches Ken who’s already seated at a table.

Sam:     You’re Ken, aren’t you? I’m Sam, nice to see you.
Ken :      Hi…(no confidence) how are you? I am Ken. Umm, Sam, you are Japanese, aren’t you?
Sam:      Yes, I’m Japanese, born and raised in Yokohama. However, since speaking Japanese isn’t allowed here, let’s keep on speaking in English.
Ken:       My English isn’t very good… (looking down at his translator apps in his smart phone) I will try to speak in English.
Sam:      Good! Now, where are you from?
Ken:       Umm, I was born in Yokohama but … raised in Tokyo.
Sam:      Great! You just used “born and raised” which I said and arranged it. You seem to have a talent for English.
Ken:       Really? Do you think so?
Sam:      Of course, “I’m originally from …” is also used quite often.
Ken:       So, “I’m originally from Yokohama”, is this OK?
Sam:    Yes, so you ask someone, “Where are you from?” and when they say “New York” but the face doesn’t look much like an American, you can also ask “Where are you originally from?”
Ken.       I see! Not like Japan , America has many people moving in… how do I say it?
Sam:      Immigrants?
Ken:       Is that how you say it? There are many immigrants in America.This phrase may be useful.
Sam: Yes, I now live in Cebu but I don’t look much like a Filipino. So, people often ask me that way.

場面：東京の英会話カフェ。先にテーブルについていたKenにSamが近づいていく。

Sam    「Ken…だよね？　Samです。はじめまして」
Ken    「は、はじめまして（自信なさげ）…　Kenです。あ、あの…Samさんって日本人なんですか？」
Sam    「そうだよ。生まれも育ちも横浜の日本人だよ。あ、でも、ここは日本語禁止だから、このまま英語で話そう」
Ken    「英語は得意じゃないけど…　(スマホの翻訳アプリを使いながら)はい、英語で話すようトライしてみます」
Sam    「いいね！　で、キミはどこ出身なの？」
Ken    「ええと、生まれは横浜で、…育ったのは東京です」
Sam    「すごいね！　僕が『生まれも育ちも』と言ったのをさっそくアレンジして使ったんだね。キミは英語の才能があるよ！」
Ken    「ええ？　そうですか！」
Sam    「そうさ。あと、『もともとは●●出身です』っていう言い方もよくするよ」
Ken    「I’m originally from Yokohama.…でいいですか？」
Sam    「そう。だから、『どこからいらしたんですか？』と聞いて、相手が『ニューヨークです』と答えたけど、顔があまりアメリカ人っぽくない場合は『もともとはどちら出身ですか』って聞いたりもよくするよ」
Ken　「なるほど。日本と違って、アメリカは違う国から引っ越してくる …　英語でなんていうのかな？」
Sam 「移民？」
Ken　「あ、そう言うんですね。アメリカは移民が多いから、その言い回しは役に立ちそうですね」
Sam　「そう、僕も今セブに住んでるけど、顔がフィリピン人っぽくないから、しょっちゅうそうやって聞かれるよ！」

Important phrases to remember
1. I was born and raised in～             生まれも育ちも～です。
2. I was born in ～　and raised in ～     生まれは～で、育ちは～です。
3. I’m originally from～                 もともとは～出身です。
4. Where are you originally from～        もともとはどちら出身ですか？
