Situation: Ken is talking about his major and his daily life .
Sam: Now tell me something about yourself.
Ken: I’m just a university student…
Sam: What’s your major?
Ken: Major?
Sam: Like economics or information science…
Ken: Oh, history
Sam: In that case, you say “I major in History”. You should remember this. It’s often used in introducing yourself.
Ken: OK, I major in History.
Sam: That’s more like it. Now, aren’t you involved in any extracurricular activities?
Ken: No, nothing. I don’t like exercises ….
Sam: Do you have a part-time job?
Ken: No, nothing at all. Well, Home teacher?
Sam: Do you mean a tutor? Someone teaching students at home is called a tutor in English.
Ken: Oh, The university I attend is third rate so there aren’t any parents who will ask us to tutor. Convenience stores and restaurants do not employ university students so much.
Sam: I guess the management likes to employ people who can work 5 days a week, rather than 2 to 3 days a week.
Ken: That’s right.
Sam: So, that means you’re studying all the time.
Ken: Er,… not that much. Even if we did study, there’s no place for employment for humanities students without skills.
Sam: That’s depressing. You shouldn’t say that.

Ken 「majorって？」
Sam 「ほら、経済学とか情報科学とか」
Ken 「ええと、歴史学です」
Sam 「そういうときは『I major in』って言うよ。これも自己紹介のときによく使うから、覚えておくといいよ」
Ken 「わかりました。私は史学を専攻しています」
Sam 「そう。その調子。部活動は何かしていないの？」
Ken 「特に何もしていません。運動は苦手だし…」
Sam 「アルバイトは何かしてる？」
Ken 「何もしていません。ええと、Home teacher?」
Sam 「あ、tutorのこと？ 家庭教師は英語でtutorというんだよ」
Ken 「あ、はい、僕が行っているのは三流大学だから、tutorを頼む親なんていません。コンビニとか飲食店も僕ら大学生はあまり雇ってくれないんです」
Sam 「そうか、お店の経営者も週に2～3日しか働けない人よりも週5日働ける人を雇いたいと考えるからね」
Ken 「そうなんです」
Sam 「じゃ、ひたすら勉強に打ち込んでいるんだ」
Ken 「……。勉強もそれほど……。だって、勉強しても、僕ら文系でスキルのない学生なんて就職先なんてないですから」
Sam 「そんな希望のないこと、言うなよ～」
