Situation: When Sam was student, he tried applying many companies. However…

Ken:              But you did some employment activities?
Sam:             Of course I did. I filled in entry sheets and sent them to about 50 companies.
Ken:             What kind of companies did you apply?
Sam:             Any companies that could employ me related to distribution, retailing and others.
Ken:             And, what happened?
Sam:            I applied to 50 and only 3 called me up for an interview. That’s when I really knew how difficult it was to get employed.
Ken:          I hear the same kind of stories from my professors and upperclassmen.
Sam:         Of the 3, I failed 2 in the first round of the Interviews. I managed to go to the final management interview for 1, but didn’t make it.
Ken:           It was depressing.
Sam:    Yes. However, the interviewer at the time was a kind person. He said, “At least, master English”, teaching me gently the reason they didn’t accept me.
Ken:      I see. So you set your mind to study English.
Sam:        No, I didn’t (laugh).
Ken:      Really?
Sam:      Yes, at the time I thought you can’t learn English if you don’t go abroad to study.

Ken      「でも、就職活動はしたんですよね？」
Sam       「やったよ！　ちゃんとエントリーシートを書いて50社くらいに提出したかな」
Ken       「どんな企業を受けたんですか？」
Sam       「就職情報誌を読んで、採用してくれそうな会社だったらどこでも受けたよ。流通とか小売とかいろいろ」
Ken       「で、どうでした？」
Sam       「50社に送って、面接に進めたのがわずか3社。就職の厳しさを身を持って感じたね」
Ken       「同様の話は先生や先輩からよく聞いてます」
Sam       「で、3社のうち2社は最初の面接で落とされた。残りの1社は役員面接までこぎつけたんだけど、最終的に落とされてしまった」
Ken 「へこみますね」
Sam       「へこんだよ。で、そのときの面接官が親切な人で、『英語くらい身に着けておくといいですよ』と、不採用の理由をやんわりと教えてくれたんだよ」
Ken       「なるほどー、それで一念発起して英語を勉強し始めたんですね」
Sam        「いや。しなかった(笑)」
Ken       「えっ、そうなんですか？」
Sam       「だって、英語なんて留学でもしないと身につかないって思ってたからね。そのときは…」
