Sam: Sorry I’m late.
Ken: There you are! You’re very late. There are quite a number of foreigners have spoken to me a while ago.
Sam: What did you talk about?
Ken: Oh, small talk.
Sam: Oh, small talk?
Ken: Last time, you told me that I couldn’t speak about myself during the exchange meeting so I decided to remember 100 words and phrases about myself.
Sam: That was a good idea.
Ken: Where I was born and raised, why I’m majoring History, the movies I like, and also the book you lent me said “take the initiative of the conversation” so I led the conversation all the way.
Sam: And, how did it go?
Ken: Well, the conversation continued quite a while.
Sam: That’s amazing!
Ken: Uh, thank you.
Umm. Were you late on purpose, Sam?
Sam: How did you know?
Well, you’ve been here in this English conversation café quite a number of times, but have hardly spoken to a native English speaker, have you Ken?
Ken: You’re right. By the way, I think the logic in that book is right.
Sam: Yes, one of the reasons why people don’t like to study English is that they can’t say what they want to say, which is frustrating. But if you can say what you want to say the most, then there won’t be frustration at all. It makes learning English more fun.

Sam 「それでどうだった？」
Ken 「これが会話のキャッチボールがけっこう続いたんですよ！」
Sam 「すごいじゃないか！」
Ken 「ありがとうございます。あ、もしかして、Samさん、わざと遅れてきたんですか？」
Sam 「バレたか。この英会話カフェに何度も来ているのに、Kenは英語ネイティブとしゃべってないもんな。」
Ken 「そうですね。とにかく、あの本のロジックは当たっていると思いましたよ。」
Sam 「そうだね。英語学習が嫌になってしまう理由のひとつは、言いたいことが言えないからフラストレーションがたまること。でも、いちばん言いたいことを英語で言える準備ができていると、その『イライラ』がなくなる。少なくとも英語学習が楽しくなるよね。」

Sam: (After replaying the conversation with the customer)
“That’s how my first business meeting went.”
Ken: Eh.. but you said you couldn’t speak English, Sam.
Sam: Yes, I did. But strangely, I found myself speaking without much of a difficulty.
Ken: Weren’t your uncle and Lisa surprised?
Sam: Well they noticed that I was talking to the customer in English sometime during the discussions, and their eyes grew wide open with surprise. After the discussion, my uncle came up to me and said “Well Sam, you can speak English”.
Ken: But how?
Sam: (handing a book over to Ken) Read this. It gives you the secret.
Ken: You studied with this book?
Sam: No, I read this book later. Its title “Study English with The Leverage Method” written by a best-selling author called Naoyuki Honda. I was doing this without any knowledge about the book.
Ken: What does it say?
Sam: In a nutshell, it says that “Memorize 100 words in the field that you are most good at and use it to pull the person who you’re talking to into your own playing field, and then, you can converse.” I had memorized the words and phrases about our bolts and nuts, so any conversation on screws allowed me to continue the conversation.
Ken: So that’s it? You did memorize the whole presentation.
Sam: Right, so I tried to make conversation with a Malaysian during an exchange meeting after the show and wasn’t able to speak at all.
So, now you have homework to do. I want you to write out 100 words in the field you are most good at, and memorize it.

Sam 「この本を要約すると『自分の得意ジャンルである偏った英語だけを100個覚えて相手を自分のフィールドに引きずりこんでしまえば会話はできる！』ということ。僕はネジに関する単語やフレーズを丸暗記していたうえに、ネジに関する話題だったから、会話が続いたというワケなんだ。」
Ken 「なるほどー。プレゼン原稿丸暗記していましたからね。」
Sam 「そうなんだ。だから、展示会後の交流会でマレーシア人と雑談したときにはまったくしゃべれなかったよ。というワケで、自分の得意ジャンルの英単語を再来週までに100個書き出して覚えてきて。じゃ、また2週間後に会おう！」

Sam: Our products are much costlier compared to the ones from China and others but then, we are confident of their safety. The prices are indicated in the brochure. There’s a discount when you buy in quantity. The discount rate is also shown in the brochure.
Customer: How about delivery?
Sam: We can ship them out within 2 to 3 days after confirmation of receipt of payment.
Customer: What kind of payment method do you accept?

Ken: What happened?
Sam: My heart was beating rapidly, and acting calm, said “Please take a seat, we will be with you in a minute” and …

Sam: Yes, I tried to ask Lisa to translate, but she was busy explaining our products to passers-by and handing out our brochures.
Ken: So you were cornered.
Sam: So I waited for about 5 minutes hoping she would end, but then, it continued without any sign of being over. So, I made up my mind, thinking I shouldn’t keep this person waiting for too long, and sat in front of him.
Ken: Oh, now I’m getting excited.

Ken: So, how did it go on the first day?
Sam: I was really nervous. I’ve never been in real contact with foreigners before, and the first occasion has to be for business!
Ken: Did you have many visitors?
Sam: I couldn’t tell many or not because everything was first time for me. But the organizers told us that it is a “Great success”.
Ken: How did the presentation go?
Sam: I made a 15 minutes presentation every hour. I was very, very uptight and nervous for the first one, but then I was able to relax after the second one.
Ken: Did your English get through?
Sam: Fortunately yes, I thought choosing Malaysia as the first step into overseas advance was a very good choice.
Ken: Why so?
Sam: There are three large ethnic groups in Malaysia, the ethnic Malayan group, the ethnic Chinese and the ethnic Indians; each speak their own language among their own people but use English when talking to others. That means everybody speaks English.
Ken: Really? I didn’t know that.
Sam: So, there’s a strong feeling among the people to try and understand what the other guy is trying to say, even though the pronunciation may be a little odd.
Ken: That’s nice.
Sam: So, they listened to my presentation attentively. I think they understood my English. The response wasn’t bad.
Ken: Wow, that must have been some experience!
Sam: I was so glad my English got across. It made me feel I should study English seriously from then.

Sam 「だからかな、ちょっとくらい違う発音でも相手の言葉を理解してあげようっていう気持ちがすごくあるんだ。」
Ken 「それはありがたいですね。」

Sam: Sorry I had to leave halfway through my story yesterday.
Ken: It weighed so heavy on my mind. I couldn’t get to sleep again last night. So what exactly did you realize the day before the trade show?
Sam: When I looked at the booth the organizers had arranged for us, I found a spot that had a sign indicating “Business Corner”.
Ken: Business Corner?
Sam: Yes, it was arranged so I could immediately discuss with people who took interest in our products after listening to my presentation.
Ken: I see.
Sam: But, I was so busy thinking about my the presentation that I had completely forgotten
that there’d be business discussions.
Ken: Wow, that’s hard.
Sam: I thought “OMG! I’m cornered”, I mean, with a presentation, you have a script to follow, but there’s none of that in business discussions, it’s like an impromptu play, isn’t it?”
Ken: So, what happened?
Sam: There wasn’t anything I could do, I mean the show starts tomorrow. So I decided to have Lisa act as a translator in that case.
Ken: Right, that may be the only way.
Sam: So, me, my uncle and Lisa went back to our hotel, wished for our success in the show by toasting with Anchor Beer and had a Malaysian dinner.

Situation: Sam is talking about his experience at Kuala Lumpur.
Sam: I arrived in Kuala Lumpur 5 months after I started preparations, the day before the “Manufacturing Show” opened.
Ken: Alone?
Sam: No, I asked a high school friend who had gone to school in the States and had time to spare, so I asked her to come along.
Ken: She couldn’t get a Job, though she could speak English?
Sam: She went to study dancing. Lisa, she’s a dancer, I mean she’s really a part-time jobber. I also took my uncle along.
Ken: Your uncle, he doesn’t speak English …?
Sam: I needed someone to hand out our brochures to people passing by our booth. The skilled workers were too busy, and it was a task that didn’t need English.
Ken: Right!
Sam: It was my first overseas trip, but I went straight to the exhibition hall, no sightseeing.
Ken: So, you must have been very nervous?
Sam: Well, yes, I had to discuss with the sponsor, carry in the goods and brochures and make preparations for the next day. Then, I realized something very important.
Ken: What’s that?
Sam: (looking at his watch) Oh, sorry, I gotta go! I’ll mail you later

Ken 「ひとりでですか？」
Sam 「いや、高校時代の友人でアメリカに留学経験があって、ヒマしてるヤツがいたんで、彼女に助っ人を頼んだ。」
Ken 「就職できなかったんですか、彼女？ 英語しゃべれるのに。」
Sam 「留学ってダンス留学だよ。彼女・リサは自称ダンサー、実質はフリーターだけどね。あとは叔父も連れていったよ。」
Ken 「叔父さん、英語がしゃべれないんじゃ…」
Sam 「当日、我々のブースの前を通りかかる人にパンフレットを渡す係が必要だったんだよ。職人たちはみんな忙しいし、英語がしゃべれなくてもできる仕事だから。」
Ken 「たしかに！」
Sam 「僕にとっての初めての海外だったんだけど、観光するヒマもなく、展示会場に入ったよ。」
Ken 「うわー、緊張したでしょうね」
Sam 「そりゃーね。その日は主催者と打ち合わせをしたり、商品やパンフレットを搬入したり、当日の準備をした。で、僕はここで大変なことに気づいてしまったんだよ。」
Ken 「なんですか？」
Sam (時計を見て)「あ、ごめん。もう行かなくちゃ！ 後でメールする！」
Ken 「えー、そんな～。またですかー！ 気になるじゃないですかぁぁぁ～！」
