Chapter 5-3
Sam becomes an impromptu consultant.

Situation: Sam and Ken are continuing the conversation about the advance of the factory.

Ken:          What happened after you appeared in the papers?
Sam:          I got many request from small factories like us to teach them the knowhow of how they could advancement into the overseas markets.
Ken:          Yeah. But, I mean, you can’t teach the skills as simply as that, can you?
Sam:          I asked my uncle and he said it’s OK if it didn’t interfere with our operations and I do it outside the working hours.
Ken:          Really? He’s kind.
Sam:         There were small companies that were also producing bolts.
Ken:          You are all competitors!
Sam:          Well, the bolt industry is an interesting place. We don’t compete with each other that much. Like I said before, there are many sizes, and the ones that make small bolts only make the small ones. On the other hand, the ones that make large ones only make large bolts. There are many small factories that only produce certain limited sizes.
Ken:          That means teaching the knowhow won’t interfere with your company.
Sam:          That’s right, we won’t be taking business away from someone. My uncle once said that when advancement overseas is made by everyone, we can appeal that the Japanese bolts and nuts are the best in the world.
Ken:          I see. So what did you do, Sam?
Sam:          So I gathered the younger ones working in the small factories in the weekend and opened up an overseas advancement study group and spoke there as well as visiting the company’s presidents to teach them face-to-face.
Ken:          So you became a teacher? Right?
Sam:         Yes, the birth of an impromptu consultant.

Ken　　「新聞に載ってから、どんなことが起きたんですか？」
Sam　　「『うちも海外進出できるのか。そのノウハウを教えて欲しい』という同じような町工場からの要望がたくさん舞い込むようになったんだ。」
Ken　　「そんな～。簡単にノウハウを教えるわけにはいきませんよねぇ。」
Sam　　「いや。叔父に相談したら、業務に支障がなければ、就業時間以外で教えてもいいよ、って。」
Ken　　「えー、やさしいなぁ。」
Sam　　「中には、同じネジを作る町工場もあったよ。」
Ken　　「ライバルじゃないですか～。」
Sam　　「ところがネジ業界っておもしろいところで、ライバルがいないんだよ。ネジはいろんなサイズがあるって言ったけど、小さいサイズを作る工場は小さいネジしか作らないし、大きいサイズを作る工場は大きいネジしか作らない。ある一定のサイズだけを作る小さな町工場がたくさん存在しているんだ。」
Ken　　「だからノウハウを教えても構わないというわけですね。」
Sam　　「そう、客の奪い合いにならない。むしろ、みんなで海外進出したほうが『日本のネジは優秀！』ってアピールになる、と叔父は言ってた。」
Ken　　「なるほどー。それでSamさんはどうしたんですか？」
Sam　　「週末に町工場の若い連中を集めて『海外進出勉強会』を開いて、そこで話をしたり、社長にマンツーマンで教えに行ったりするようになったんだ。」
Ken　　「先生、ですね。」
Sam　　「そうだね、にわかコンサルタント誕生だね。」
