Sorry I’m late because…

Situation: At last, Ken speaks English too.

(Sam is very late and keeps Ken waiting for about 1 hour from the meeting time)
Sam:         Sorry I’m late.
Ken:          There you are! You’re very late. There are quite a number of foreigners have spoken to me a while ago.
Sam:         What did you talk about?
Ken:          Oh, small talk.
Sam:         Oh, small talk?
Ken:       Last time, you told me that I couldn’t speak about myself during the exchange meeting so I decided to remember 100 words and phrases about myself.
Sam:         That was a good idea.
Ken:          Where I was born and raised, why I’m majoring History, the movies I like, and also the book you lent me said “take the initiative of the conversation” so I led the conversation all the way.
Sam:         And, how did it go?
Ken:          Well, the conversation continued quite a while.
Sam:         That’s amazing!
Ken:          Uh, thank you.
              Umm. Were you late on purpose, Sam?
Sam:         How did you know?
                  Well, you’ve been here in this English conversation café quite a number of times, but have hardly spoken to a native English speaker, have you Ken?
Ken:          You’re right. By the way, I think the logic in that book is right.
Sam:          Yes, one of the reasons why people don’t like to study English is that they can’t say what they want to say, which is frustrating. But if you can say what you want to say the most, then there won’t be frustration at all. It makes learning English more fun.
Ken:        Isn’t that right.

Sam　　　「遅れてごめん！」
Ken　　　「もう遅いじゃないですか！　その間にいろいろな外国人に話しかけられちゃいましたよー」
Sam　　「どんな話をしてたんだい？」
Ken 　　「まあ、雑談ですよ。」
Sam　　「へー、雑談ねぇ。」
Ken 「前回、Samさんが『交流会の雑談で自分のことがしゃべれなかった』とおっしゃっていたじゃないですか。だから、僕は自分自身についての100の単語とフレーズを覚えようと思ったんですよ。」
Sam　　　「それはいい考えだね。」
Ken　　　「どんなところで生まれ育ったかとか、なんで史学科を選んだのか、とか好きな映画とか。あとは貸してくださった本にも『話の主導権を自分で握れ』って書いてあったので、僕からずっと話題をリードしたんですよ。」
Sam　　　「それでどうだった？」
Ken　　　「これが会話のキャッチボールがけっこう続いたんですよ！」
Sam　　　「すごいじゃないか！」
Ken　　　「ありがとうございます。あ、もしかして、Samさん、わざと遅れてきたんですか？」
Sam　　　「バレたか。この英会話カフェに何度も来ているのに、Kenは英語ネイティブとしゃべってないもんな。」
Ken　　　「そうですね。とにかく、あの本のロジックは当たっていると思いましたよ。」
Sam　　　「そうだね。英語学習が嫌になってしまう理由のひとつは、言いたいことが言えないからフラストレーションがたまること。でも、いちばん言いたいことを英語で言える準備ができていると、その『イライラ』がなくなる。少なくとも英語学習が楽しくなるよね。」
Ken　　　「本当。その通りですね。」
