Sam: (After replaying the conversation with the customer)
“That’s how my first business meeting went.”
Ken: Eh.. but you said you couldn’t speak English, Sam.
Sam: Yes, I did. But strangely, I found myself speaking without much of a difficulty.
Ken: Weren’t your uncle and Lisa surprised?
Sam: Well they noticed that I was talking to the customer in English sometime during the discussions, and their eyes grew wide open with surprise. After the discussion, my uncle came up to me and said “Well Sam, you can speak English”.
Ken: But how?
Sam: (handing a book over to Ken) Read this. It gives you the secret.
Ken: You studied with this book?
Sam: No, I read this book later. Its title “Study English with The Leverage Method” written by a best-selling author called Naoyuki Honda. I was doing this without any knowledge about the book.
Ken: What does it say?
Sam: In a nutshell, it says that “Memorize 100 words in the field that you are most good at and use it to pull the person who you’re talking to into your own playing field, and then, you can converse.” I had memorized the words and phrases about our bolts and nuts, so any conversation on screws allowed me to continue the conversation.
Ken: So that’s it? You did memorize the whole presentation.
Sam: Right, so I tried to make conversation with a Malaysian during an exchange meeting after the show and wasn’t able to speak at all.
So, now you have homework to do. I want you to write out 100 words in the field you are most good at, and memorize it.

Sam 「彼らは僕が客と英語で会話しているのに途中で気づいて、目を見開いて驚いていたよ。商談が終わった後、『なーんだ。オサム、やっぱり英語できるんじゃないか』って叔父さんに言われたよ。」
Ken 「どうしてしゃべれたんですか？」
Sam 「(本を手渡しながら)この本読んでみて。この本にその秘密が載ってた。」
Ken 「この本で勉強したんですか？」
Sam 「いや、僕は後からこの本を読んだんだよ。本田直之というベストセラー作家が書いた『レバレッジ英語勉強法』という本なんだけど、ここに書かれていたことを僕は知らずに実践していたんだ。」
Ken 「なんですか、それ。」
Sam 「この本を要約すると『自分の得意ジャンルである偏った英語だけを100個覚えて相手を自分のフィールドに引きずりこんでしまえば会話はできる！』ということ。僕はネジに関する単語やフレーズを丸暗記していたうえに、ネジに関する話題だったから、会話が続いたというワケなんだ。」
Ken 「なるほどー。プレゼン原稿丸暗記していましたからね。」
Sam 「そうなんだ。だから、展示会後の交流会でマレーシア人と雑談したときにはまったくしゃべれなかったよ。というワケで、自分の得意ジャンルの英単語を再来週までに100個書き出して覚えてきて。じゃ、また2週間後に会おう！」
Ken 「えっ！ またそんな～！」
