Situation: Sam is talking about the first day of the show.
Ken: So, how did it go on the first day?
Sam: I was really nervous. I’ve never been in real contact with foreigners before, and the first occasion has to be for business!
Ken: Did you have many visitors?
Sam: I couldn’t tell many or not because everything was first time for me. But the organizers told us that it is a “Great success”.
Ken: How did the presentation go?
Sam: I made a 15 minutes presentation every hour. I was very, very uptight and nervous for the first one, but then I was able to relax after the second one.
Ken: Did your English get through?
Sam: Fortunately yes, I thought choosing Malaysia as the first step into overseas advance was a very good choice.
Ken: Why so?
Sam: There are three large ethnic groups in Malaysia, the ethnic Malayan group, the ethnic Chinese and the ethnic Indians; each speak their own language among their own people but use English when talking to others. That means everybody speaks English.
Ken: Really? I didn’t know that.
Sam: So, there’s a strong feeling among the people to try and understand what the other guy is trying to say, even though the pronunciation may be a little odd.
Ken: That’s nice.
Sam: So, they listened to my presentation attentively. I think they understood my English. The response wasn’t bad.
Ken: Wow, that must have been some experience!
Sam: I was so glad my English got across. It made me feel I should study English seriously from then.

Ken 「で、当日はどうだったんですか？」
Sam 「いやー、そりゃすごい緊張したよ。だって、外国人とまともに接するのも初めてなのに、それがいきなり仕事なんだから！」
Ken 「お客さんはたくさん来たんですか？」
Sam 「自分にとってはすべてが初めての経験だから、どのくらいがたくさんかはわからないけど、主催者側は『大成功！』って言ってたよ。」
Ken 「プレゼンはうまく行きました？」
Sam 「1時間ごとに15分のプレゼンをしたんだけど、最初の1回目はものすごい緊張したでも、2回目からはだんだんリラックスできるようになった。」
Ken 「英語はうまく通じたんですか？」
Sam 「そうだね。結果的に、一番最初の海外進出をマレーシアにしたのは大正解だったと思う。」
Ken 「どういう意味ですか？」
Sam 「マレーシアにはマレー系民族と中華系民族とインド系民族が住んでいて、それぞれの言語を話すんだ。でも、違う民族間では英語を話す。だから、みんな英語を話せるんだ。」
Ken 「へー、知りませんでした。」
Sam 「だからかな、ちょっとくらい違う発音でも相手の言葉を理解してあげようっていう気持ちがすごくあるんだ。」
Ken 「それはありがたいですね。」
Sam 「だから、僕のプレゼンもきちんと聞いてくれた。英語も理解してくれていたと思うよ手ごたえは確実に感じたし。」
Ken 「それは素晴らしい経験でしたね。」
Sam 「英語がちゃんと通じたのがうれしくて、それで、その後も英語の勉強をちゃんとしようって気持ちにもなれたんだ。」
