Chapter 6-3
English improvement method (Part 3. Singing English songs)

Situation: An unexpected national traits of Asian people

Sam:   I also tried my original study method.
Ken:    And, what was that?
Sam:   Singing songs in English
Ken:    Why is singing good?
Sam:   Remember? Can you still sing the popular songs when you were still very young or
your elementary school song?
Ken:    (reflecting) “Yes, I can still sing my elementary school song”
Sam:   See, you remember the ones you learned together with the rhythm. Ken, do you still remember
the phrase that native speaker often use when making an introduction, the one I taught you for the
first time?
Ken:    (thinking back a little) “Yes, born and raised” wasn’t it?
Sam:   Right, you know, in my high school days, I was in the eighties copy band and these words are
the first word in a song called “Don’t Stop Believin” by a group called “Journey”. When I
heard a native speaker use this word for the first time, I though “I knew those words, there in
that song!” I already knew the phrase, so all I had to do was to use it.
Ken:    I see. That sounds good. It also good for change of pace.
Sam:   Right, and another thing though I didn’t know at the time, many people in the
Philippines love karaoke. Many students from Vietnam also love karaoke. It seems many Asian people love karaoke.
Ken:    So, did you go singing karaoke with them?
Sam:   You bet! Everyone had a blast!

Sam 「
Ken 「
Sam 「
Ken 「
Ken 「(ちょっと考えて)『born and raised in~』ですか?」
Ken 「
Sam 「

Chapter 6-2
English improvement method Part 2. Use what you’ve just learned.

Situation: How to learn English in Japan

Sam:            There’s another method that was suggested. It is to use the phrase you’ve learned immediately.
Ken:             I get it.
Sam:            They say that living in an English spoken environment improves your English. This is because you are constantly hearing English. In addition, you have many opportunities to learn in English.
Ken:             You could be right. If we can learn to speak by only being showered in English, that would mean you will be able to speak if you had an English radio station on all the time, doesn’t it?
Sam:            Right, just listening to the flow won’t make you talk.
Ken:             However, living here in Japan doesn’t give you many opportunities to use words and phrases you’ve just learned.
Sam:            So, there’s English conversation Cafés like this one, isn’t there? I used this place a lot as an opportunity for my output.
Ken:             That’s right?
Sam:            I also started Skype English conversation
Ken:             Skype English conversation?
Sam:            It’s an on-line English conversation lesson by using Skype. The software which lets you have free calls over the internet and a web camera.
Ken:             Oh yes, I’ve heard about it. You can have English conversation lessons at home?
Sam:      Yes, that one. Talking to someone through a monitor felt like a long-distance    love affair and it’s kind of fun.

Ken 「
Ken 「
Ken 「Skype

Chapter 6-1
English improvement method (Part 1.  Just keep on reading out aloud.)

Situation: The effective way to learn English

Ken:              What was the big problem?
Sam:              One of the conditions for entrance was TOEFL score of 550 or higher. The person who advised me also said that I’d have a hard time keeping up with the class with my English at that time.
Ken:        uh,,, So what happened?
Sam:              I bought some books in TOEFL test and started studying. I also tried to have interviews with MBA holders and those who were good English speakers around me. “How do you improve your English?” I asked again and again. And I found that those who spoke good English had one learning method in common.
Ken:        What was that?  I need to know it now!  Please tell me!
Sam:              One of the ways to improve your English is to read it out aloud. Many people told me they’ve done this.
Ken:               I see. You did say you were able to speak in English because you practiced your presentation draft by reading it out aloud, didn’t you Sam?
Sam:              Yes, I knew how effective it was. So, I decided to start it out immediately.
Ken:        What kind of text did you use?
Sam:              Anything that was written in English. In-flight magazines in the seat pocket of an airline or brochures of other companies I received at the trade shows. Anything is okay. I took them back to my hotel and read them out aloud.
Ken:        Really?
Sam:              Reading out aloud makes you remember by sight, and learn it by sound by saying it out aloud. This means you learn it over twice. So you learn it better.

Ken 「
Ken 「
Ken 「

Chapter 5-5
Eyes set on Asian Institute of Management in the Philippines

Situation: Sam tells Ken how he decided to study in Asia.

Ken:          So, where did you go? The States?
Sam:          No, well, of course, the main stream of MBA is in the US. But it was a little different for me. In addition to learning Management and English, another of my target was to establish a network with the business people overseas, especially in Asia. So I was thinking of studying in Asia from the start.
Ken:          Really, studying for MBA in Asia?
Sam:          Yes, I asked someone in one of the organizations affiliated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Japan who once sponsored a trade show overseas, and he gave me a name of a graduate school suitable for me to attend.
Ken:          What’s the name of the school?
Sam:         It’s a graduate school called AIM in the Philippines.
Ken:          AIM? What is AIM?
Sam:          You should ask, “What does XXX stand for?” in such case. This is used quite often by native speakers also.
Ken:          So then, what does AIM stand for?
Sam:         AIM stands for Asian Institute of Management
Ken:          Does that mean many students from Asian countries?
Sam:          About half are from the Philippines, while the rest comes from the ASEAN nations. The curriculum is focused on case study methods based on those being taught at Harvard Business School (HBS), which also makes it quite popular.
Ken:          The classes were done by English?
Sam:          Yes, English is one of the official language in the Philippines and apart from their native language classes, most of the classes from elementary to graduate school are conducted in English.
Ken:          Is that so!
Sam:         So, I set my eyes on attending AIM and started preparations.
Ken:          It must be pretty tough getting accepted?
Sam:       According to the person who suggested AIM, he said that my experience
in advancement of a small factory overseas would be important. However there was still a big problem remaining.

Sam 「MBA
Ken 「
Sam 「AIM
Ken 「AIM
Sam 「そういうときには『What does ~ stand for?』
What does AIM stand for?」
Sam 「AIMはAsian Institute of Managementだよ。」
Ken 「
Ken 「
Ken 「
Ken 「

Decision to take an MBA course abroad.

Situation: Sam’s success story continues.

Ken:          Quite a success story, isn’t it?
Sam:         No, that isn’t the end of the story.
Ken:          You mean there’s more to it?
Sam:          Yes, in the study group, I taught them how to participate in overseas
exhibitions and shows, how to prepare brochures and web pages in
English. The more I did, the more I became aware of my limited
knowledge.
Ken:          What do you mean?
Sam:          When I started out, the study group members listened to me, saying “I
see”, but then, as it progressed, I couldn’t answer the questions thrown at
me. I had the knowlegde for advancing overseas, but I didn’t have any
knowledge of small factories or about management.
Ken:          So, what did you do?
Sam:         I decided to study abroad.
Ken:       Study abroad!!
Sam:          I had been studying English on my own, but then, the more acquainted I became with overseas customers, I realized how weak my English was. So I decided to learn both English and Management.
Ken:          So, you went to the faculty of management in a university?

Ken    「

Chapter 5-3
Sam becomes an impromptu consultant.

Situation: Sam and Ken are continuing the conversation about the advance of the factory.

Ken:          What happened after you appeared in the papers?
Sam:          I got many request from small factories like us to teach them the knowhow of how they could advancement into the overseas markets.
Ken:          Yeah. But, I mean, you can’t teach the skills as simply as that, can you?
Sam:          I asked my uncle and he said it’s OK if it didn’t interfere with our operations and I do it outside the working hours.
Ken:          Really? He’s kind.
Sam:         There were small companies that were also producing bolts.
Ken:          You are all competitors!
Sam:          Well, the bolt industry is an interesting place. We don’t compete with each other that much. Like I said before, there are many sizes, and the ones that make small bolts only make the small ones. On the other hand, the ones that make large ones only make large bolts. There are many small factories that only produce certain limited sizes.
Ken:          That means teaching the knowhow won’t interfere with your company.
Sam:          That’s right, we won’t be taking business away from someone. My uncle once said that when advancement overseas is made by everyone, we can appeal that the Japanese bolts and nuts are the best in the world.
Ken:          I see. So what did you do, Sam?
Sam:          So I gathered the younger ones working in the small factories in the weekend and opened up an overseas advancement study group and spoke there as well as visiting the company’s presidents to teach them face-to-face.
Ken:          So you became a teacher? Right?
Sam:         Yes, the birth of an impromptu consultant.

Ken 「
Sam 「
Ken 「

Chapter 5-2
Overseas advance is a great success.

Situation: Sam tells Ken what happened after the show.

Ken:          So what happened after the show?
Sam:          Well, to summarize it, my uncle’s vision overseas market was a great success.
Ken:          You received many orders.
Sam:          We managed to receive only two orders during the show. But then, we began receiving orders constantly from other companies and through our small factory’s English web site.
Ken:          Why are there so many orders all of a sudden?
Sam:          There are many kinds of bolts and nuts. But what we made were the ones used in the construction of buildings and houses. Malaysia was in the middle of its economic growth and was undergoing a construction rush, with a strong demand for bolts.
Ken:          So your uncle must have had a great vision of what’s happening.
Sam:          Maybe. So, we started out participating in some exhibitions in South East Asia like in Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines.
Ken:          Wow, cool!
Sam:          And the small factory on the brink of bankruptcy all of a sudden, turned into a fast growing company.
Ken:          A miracle, isn’t it?

Ken 「
Ken 「
Ken 「
Ken 「
